Two-Way Radio IP Ratings - What Do They Mean?

The “IP” in IP Rating refers to Ingress Protection, which defines how airtight a radio enclosure is from dust particles (solids) and moisture (liquids). In other words, the extent to which a radio enclosure is sealed to prevent solids and liquids from entering the radio and destroying the circuitry.

The rating system was developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), which is an internat
ional standards organization comprised of electrical engineers, academic and industrial experts.

What is an IP67 rating?

An IP Rating of 67 provides total protection against dust and immersion in up to 3.3 feet of water. Most commercial two-way radio applications will seek an IP Rating (both digits) of 5 or higher. However, it will depend on your industry and operating environment. Understanding the IP Rating system is significant because it ensures the safety of the device, but more importantly, the people operating the device. So, when reviewing two-way radio models for rent or purchase, be sure to consider the IP Rating required for the operating environment, to protect the device and its users.

Prairie Mobile Communications offers a variety of two-way radios from well-known and reputable manufacturers (Kenwood, Motorola, Icom, etc.), with medium to high IP Ratings. Our Radio Sales Consultants and Technical Experts would be pleased to discuss applicable IP Ratings for your business and the safety of your people.
